CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_ Reported by Jennifer Sellers/NASA - Sterling Software Minutes of the Internet School Networking Working Group (ISN) Thanks to Jodi Chu for the notes from which these minutes are derived. Agenda The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:00 p.m. The meeting agenda was as follows: o Introduction to ISN o Participant Introductions and Exchange of Project Information o K-12 White Pages Project o ISN Document Repository Project o Future Projects o Any Other Business Introduction to ISN The first part of the meeting was spent reviewing the charter, goals, and milestones for those that were new to the ISN group. There were quite a few K-12 educators in attendance. Functions of ISN were described; they are to facilitate dialogue between end users and the technical community. The ISN will articulate the challenges facing the K-12 community, find out what the needs are, then find people in the Internet to meet the needs. The chair noted that the goals and milestones will need to be updated before the next IETF in Danvers, MA. She also noted that FYI 22, ``FYI on Questions and Answers: Answers to Commonly Asked `Primary and Secondary School Internet User' Questions,'' will need updating. Jennifer Sellers (NASA/Sterling Software) announced that she will be stepping down as ISN chair after this meeting. Jodi Chu (University of Hawaii) will be taking over for the next IETF, which will be held in Danvers, MA April 3-7. The March 94 deadlines have been met. They are: the release of draft-ietf-isn-expectations-00.txt, ``Ways to Define User Expectations,'' and publication of RFC 1709, ``K-12 Internetworking Guidelines.'' Other documents of interest to the group were pointed out. The California Department of Education Technology Planning Guide is a comprehensive document which can be requested from the state department of education and is on-line at goldmine.cde.ca.gov. A document by Bob Carlitz and Gene Hastings (University of Pittsburgh) entitled ``Stages of Connectivity for School Networking'' is supposed to be available at the Web site http://info.ckp.edu. The ISN mailing list will probably be moving. April Marine (NASA/Sterling Software) volunteered to host it at NASA NAIC. A message will be sent to the list when it has been moved. Participant Introductions and Exchange of Project Information The next hour or so was spent allowing attendees to introduce themselves and describe their projects and interests in K-12 networking. Each ISN meeting for some time has used this process and members continue to request that it continue. Some of the participants' e-mail addresses, project descriptions, and URLs are listed at the end of these minutes. Members requested that these be disseminated to the isn-wg list. K-12 White Pages Project The K-12 White Pages project has a roughly-designed template and Susan Calcari (InterNIC) gave an update as to the status of a group to develop access to and implementation of the database. The InterNIC Directory Services had offered to house the database in an X.500 DSA waiving the 50 entry limit. There were some concerns raised that the X.500 service would not give enough flexibility for searching of fields, since educators want a few fields which are not available in vanilla X.500 and which may not be searchable by clients not configured beyond vanilla. Additionally, if the database grew as anticipated, the DSAs would need to be distributed, which is not a trivial task, particularly if it is to be delegated to an administrator of a local K-12 server. After much discussion, it was decided that a committee would be formed to continue working with the InterNIC directory services to investigate possible solutions which may include other directory services like WHOIS++. Ed Klein (SURAnet) volunteered to put together a Web form for collection of data so that momentum can continue and data collection can begin. ISN Document Repository Project The ISN Document Repository Project will replace the goal of writing 2 documents -- guideline for connections for providers and guidelines for educational sites. Brian Lloyd (Lloyd Internetworking) offered to house the documents and Sepi Boroumand (NASA/Hughes STX) offered to review the documents occasionally to ensure that the documents in the repository are the current versions. Any Other Business A person who may be willing to update FYI 22 was identified, and the name will be released after the chair has contacted the person. Future projects were not discussed as there are enough projects to work on now and time had expired.
