This was a great idea didn't quite pan out for one reason; a lack of contrast. 
The modeling (all... 1 of it) is quite good, and I like that whole "matrix
construct" look, but a bit more shadow (or maybe color) would be very helpful
in differentiating between the mint and the plane.  Great idea though, I'm glad
I got to see this one.
