You should start looking at radiosity and adding more depth to your textures,
adding dirt/smudges etc. Also the paper would be better as a bezier patch with
just a slight adjustment to the coords to make it not totally flat, this can be
done easily by hand without using a modeller for sheets of paper. A nice image
though.

A good image overall.  Could be improved with more 
finishing touches and detals, such as the not-so-flat 
paper you mentioned, and maybe a sharpened pencil.  
It's not too difficult to use an array to keep track of 
where random objects are placed and use a simple 
distance check when placing the next objects.  I've 
done this for my povcomp entry (placing rocks and 
mushrooms), so if you're interested I could send you the 
code (not sure if you can download it from povcomp 
site).

Pros: Very good for a first full scene! Plus, you are already aware of the
possible enhancements. Good composition, nice modelling, well chosen textures.
Lighting is already fairly good, imho. Interesting interpretation of the topic,
too. 
Cons: some small modelling mistakes (2 green pins overlapping, the hydrogens
look like they're intersecting the table). I believe the ambient on all the
objects in the scene but the carbons to be too high for a radiosity scene, 
thus the slight "washed-out" look.
