Inspired by the "Foundation" series by Isaac Asimov.
Trantor is the capital planet (and city) of the Galactic 
Empire.  Except for the Imperial sector, the whole planet 
is covered by a metallic structure.  In addition to 
protecting people from bad weather, it seems that it help
 Trantorians to feel safe.

You can see on that picture the elevator that was build
some 200 years ago.  It transport travelers and goods from and to the spaceships, thus eliminating the need for expensive shuttle launches.
