IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
Years ago I read about a special crate that
one could build AND it would produce an actual
photograph of a Freemish crate.
You may remember the Freemish crate from school,
it's known as an "undecidable" illusion.
Although the crate is cube, it is impossible to
build.
Also, years ago, when I started ray tracing I always
thought it would be fun to take a "picture" of this
special freemish crate but never got around to it.
Then I saw this months IRTC topic and I knew what I must do.
The bad part is I did not catch this until the 24th.
I am pleased with the results but I feel this
model has the potential to be a very stunning
render.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:
The actual objects in the model was created with
the demo version of Rhino 3D. Then exported as a POV file with
the objects each in their own INC file. The rest was created in
POV-RAY. I would say the two hardest aspects of this render
were cutting the crate to give the proper illusion and the
placement of the light.
The cutting took quite a while. The one thing you find first is the
fact that the camera angle or perspective cannot change once you cut the
crate. So you have to set up the whole scene before you start cutting.
The one issue I was not prepared for was the light. I really wanted to use shadows
but it took some time to find a place for the light so that the shadow did not
give away the illusion to quickly, ie: the shadow had gaping holes in it where I
did the cutting.
