This image is too dark. I know, I know. That was, to an extent the
intention, and I note you mention losing some of interesting points
with the loss of the light source. Here's a suggestion on that score: 
You were on the right track with having a dim light_source above to
provide at least some illumination. The problem, I expect, was the
unwanted shadows cast by a light_source located where a light_source
normally would be. In attempting to emulate diffuse lighting, therefore
it is best to add the keyword "shadowless" to such a light source, 
making it what it called a "fill" light. Same illumination value, but 
no shadows computed from that light_source.
