The only suggestion I could make is the "ray" made out of a halo. In
order to look more like a real beam of light, it should have a spotlight
running along its length, so that the spot where the halo falls will be
illuminated. Also, had you gone with atmosphere instead, remember that 
your sunlight could have had "atmosphere off" attached to the light source
so that you wouldn't have had to worry about the sunlight interacting
with the atmosphere. This might save fiddling with putting a spotlight
inside a halo. You could simply add the spotlight in the appropriate
place.
