1700 - 1915 Technical Session: "Interconnecting Smart Objects with the Internet"

The desire to connect almost anything to the Internet is greater than ever. There are many reasons for 
incorporating IP into every day devices. For some the reasons may be driven by lower cost, the need to 
interwork with other Internet applications, the desire to implement particular protocols, or simply 
the availability of source code. As IP meets constrained devices, new use cases and requirements are 
being raised and the IETF has ongoing efforts to address them in Working Groups such as CORE, 6LOWPAN, 
and ROLL. Many other IETF activities are also applicable to constrained devices.

To learn more about architectural challenges the IAB held a workshop on 'Interconnecting Smart Objects 
with the Internet' prior to the IETF 72 meeting in Prague and published a report soon afterwards,
available at http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-iab-smart-object-workshop

The report illustrates some of the challenges the industry is facing in an attempt to improve 
interoperability in areas where IP has not been used before. This technical plenary is 
devoted to the topic of smart objects and will summarize the workshop and solicit feedback 
from the wider IETF community.  Jari Arkko will summarize the workshop report and 
Hannes Tschofenig will moderate the panel discussion where Fred Baker, Zach Shelby, 
Carsten Bormann, and Robert Assimiti will share their views with the community.
